hello all,

 

i'm planning on building my own htpc/nas pc but i have some value documents to so i want a raid 5 config.

 

now this is my question is it possible to use a 30gb ssd to cache my raid 5 or will this not work ?

and do any of you know if their are things that change if you use an ssd to cache a raid5?

Are you going to use a software raid or a hardware version? If software such as FreeNas or Nas4Free there is no way to cache the raid since SSD Cache accelleration is done through the motherboard Raid controller. And the controller will see 5 individual drives if it is a software raid.

There are raid controllers that support having dedicated SSD cache drives, that are not one of the HDD in the raid 5 array. There are not exact models that come now from the top of my head, but I can look for them if you want. Note, that they are expensive raid controllers.

@DavidtheDoom i will use a hardware raid card for the better performance and reliability, i will also run windows 7 on it and install software that i will use to make all the magic work.

 

@ForsakenLive i was not aware of that but it looks cheaper to buy a separate ssd to cache if somethings go wrong with the cache ssd it will be cheaper to replace.

There are motherboards that can do this (Asus has a couple), but they are high end boards.
