Is it worth it buying an external GPU if I do nor have enough space for a full gaming PC tower? I am looking froward to buy a new laptop since this is my last year at school and I want to upgrade to something that is portable and powerful for my feature. I do not game a lot, but I would like to have the option. I had seen some eGPU reviews but they are old and I want to know if you all think is it worth it to get one in 2020.

I been looking into Razer, if I will spend more than $1000 on a laptop I better get something that is worth it. Thank you for your recommendations.

Hope I'm not too late in responding to your query but NOOOOOO, don't get an eGPU or a gaming laptop for that matter. If you were already within a budget where you could afford an enclosure, graphics card and a premium laptop for the Thunderbolt 3 port/s, then I would recommend you just get a Desktop and have a very portable laptop or 2-in-1, both with USB-C and get into the file sharing on Windows and OneDrive cloud saving (or any other cloud service you'd like for that matter). If you were already looking to just play games or do GPU intensive tasks at home only, then why bother with a bulky, expensive gaming laptop that gets you 6 hours of battery in the best of times.

I'm not just bashing on laptops for the sake of being a desktop-build-it-yourself-it's-better kind of guy. I'm telling you because I stupidly bought a Thunderbolt 3 laptop with that idea in mind, plunking down around $2,500 on a laptop, then $400 on a Razer Core X (the X for the ethernet, not the RGB btw, don't judge me) and $350 for a mid-tier GPU that wouldn't be overkill for the TB3 bandwidth. This garbage is bad. Laptop CPUs just aren't there, especially U-series chips (or their new 10th-gen equivalents).

It'll probably end up being just as expensive as the laptop setup I doubt much cheaper, but you'll get the benefits of portability and battery life when away, but performance at home.

Currently looking at a Surface Pro X for school (notes with the pen and really only need Office apps on the go), but a desktop with an RTX 2070S and R7 3700X and it'll still be cheaper than the junk I already have.

btw, they aren't as small as you may think. You can get some PC cases around that size.
