I have wanted to update my home server for a while, its running out of memory.... Its has been on 95% usage for over a year now (CPU does not support more then 32GB).  And I wanted to upgraded a year ago. But idk what to buy. The server uses now around 80 watts average and I would like to keep it below 100 watts. This server is build from parts I could buy cheaply or just had laying around.

I would like to reuse some parts like the disks, they are fine for now anyway.

Is someone that can recommend my anything?

(I have a lot of DDR3 EEC memory laying around (8GB sticks))

What os? You can probably optimie the ram usage a lot by turning on memory balloning.

But if you want a upgrade, Id probably go for amd ryen, a good amount faster, lower power, and supports more ram.

What type of ddr3 ecc?

You can go with dual 2011, but its not going to be super low power. I got a dual e5 2680 v2 system if you want me to test powre usage.

Also having a lot of dimms really chews up power, I think those dimms are like 1 or 2 w each, and 8 or 16 of them really adds up.

Memory balloning is on, its real time usage. So if there is an VM not using it, it keeps it free for other vm's.

What type of ddr3 ecc? Hynix 8GB 10600R (16 of them)

I was thinking about an: DELL POWEREDGE R720XD But yea... power usage

Yea that 720 isn't gonna idle or run sub 100w, esp with 16dimms, your probably thinking about 200w normal load.

Do you have swap? even with high memory usage if performance is fine I wouldn't worry about the high memory usage.

so this is proxmox then?

What is the io of the swap? If its not super high and performance is fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Otherwise, either chew up power with 2011, or spend a good amount of money on ryen.

I said it was: Proxmox 5.4.13-1, so you say build a new server? not buy an old enterprise one? Because low memory is the problem, not the cpu.

Well i missed that

If you care about power, going new is really your only option. Those dual socket systems are pretty power hungry.

The CPU and the motherboard are not the problem. That's gonna cost like 500 euro or something. But the memory is the problem, especially if I have to buy everything new. Is there not something that uses DDR3 but can support more memory?

Any system that takes your ddr3r dimms won't be super low power, and older aswell. The 2011 systems are the ones that take lots of ddr3, but there power hungry.

I don't think ram is going to be that bad, 64gb of ddr4 u seems to be about 300 on pcpp in the us.

Dubble the 300 and you have it for my country, and then a small upgrade is gonna cost 1100 euro... (1241 dollar) #TAX

Id then try to optimie you ram usage now.

what is the swap io? IS performance fine? If there isn't a issue, Id keep using that system for a bit longer.

Then I think I will try to keep this running for a little longer. Maybe until I upgrade my game pc and use that motherboard + cpu

One thing you can do to cut down on memroy usage is to convert some of those vms to containers, that will save some ram. Also do all those vms need their full ram amount?

Most of them do, But yes I was things about that also of making containers. But that would not save a lot. The ubuntu VM's are not using a lot. except for the media server. But that one also uses it to cache the movies that users are watching.

What program is the media server running? Giving it extra ram probably won't help if its swapped out on the host.

Also you can try to replace the freenas vm with ZFS  on the host, which should be easier to manage and perform better.

You maybe samba on the host. But then I lose the risk of losing the data while doing it. Or I need to copy 5TB's of data over to another device...

And then also the problem, if I ever update the server. Now I can just migrate the VM's and put the disks in the other system and I'm done. Then I have a bigger problem.

Ive done this upgrade before, Just rsync and its good.

You can also do the shareing in a container, so then you can just move the container to a new host.
