I currently have X-470 asus prime-pro and I wanna update my cpu to a 3700x. I know Im not going to have pcie gen4 but wondering if they would be a compatibility issue or thermal issues.

You should be fine, you will just need to update the bios before installing a 3rd gen CPU.

new pcie versions are backwards compatible
