This is my friends problem, not mine, he just didnt know where to post things so i told him to write about his problem, he/we would really appriciate some help. Thanks

The problem occurred some time ago when playing GTA iv making the computers fans spin like **** and then just restart like nothing happened... So i thought the problem might be overheating because of dust or something so I bought a can of compressed air and cleaned the computer and then the problem actually disappeared!

And a few month after the problem occurred once again, so i tried the same solution and the problem went away once again but now the problem occurred a lot faster once again, and now it hasn't disappeared when cleaning the computer. So I checked all the temperatures when playing bf4 or Assassins Creed BF and the cpu temp doesn't get higher than 50-60* and the gpu's temp is stuck at around 80*, and these temperatures is rather natural for the specs of the computer when i checked their developers websites and still the computer dies for some reason after about 5-40 min of playing demanding games, and I haven't overclocked anything so i don't think that would be the problem. And yes I've updated all the hardware to the latest update.

So, have anyone any idea of how i might fix the problem and since i don't have any warranty left I rather not send it to get fixed.

Specs:

MK ASRock Z68 EXTREME3 GEN 3 S.1155, Z68, ATX
CPU Core i5 3570K 3,4Ghz

PSU Fractal Design 650W Tesla/650W/80+

Run everything at stock speeds, no overclocks and see how that goes.

Sadly, no. only other psu i have is a 300W one from like the 90s xD

Hmm I mean all you need to do is hook up the bare essentials like the motherboard, hard drive and the graphics card. Some of the connectors have changed since the 90's so I'm really not sure if you will need adapters or even if it will power the system. You might be able to find a $20 generic PSU on Amazon or something to test it. How long has your friend had the computer?

if it crash on games then mostlikely it will dump with something like a prime95.

mayne something went wrong with the motherboard? although I'd not dip into that yet. try to settle the psu stuff first.

but have you tried each ram? memtest etc.

Live your life like a dream.

He had it since last summer, yeah, the problem is the connectors, this psu doesnt even have a 6pin. :P yeah i suppose that will be what he will have to do unless he has something at home (we are at a lan-party so thats why we only have my old stuff)

So the system only turned off when playing games right? And does the computer turn on at all?

Stress test the CPU and GPU. But not at the same time. For the GPU get furmark or MSI kombustor. Set it to a demanding setting and let it run for about 8 hours. I know its' a pain in the ass.

I've done it too. You won't be able to use the computer in the meantime.

If the PC won't restart then the GPU is fine. Do the same thing with the CPU. Prime95 will do.

If the CPU and GPU stress tests turns out well and this is only happening when you are playing demanding games then it's probably the PSU. Although it is weird because it's seems like a good one. But someone will get a faulty one at some point.

I had EXACTLY the same problem except the fan spinning thing before the restart. Check out my old topic when I was trying to find what's wrong with my PC if that's any help to you.

When it has died, it can be turned on and used normally. After the fans have stopped spinning like a bayblade on crack

Maybe the PSU isn't big enough and every time you put in under load playing games, it shuts off because it's overloaded and can't power the whole system. This isn't that accurate but put all your parts into this calculator - http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp and tell us how much power the site says you need to power the system.

The PSUs watts are more than enough for a single 680. But still it can be the PSU.

Thanks alot, ill get back with a result in about 10 hours, since we already ran prime95 for a couple of hours and nothing has shown so far.

No generic, always go for one from reputable company, you can get a cheap one from said company, just don't go with noname/unknown company.

Nothing to see here, move along

@Riddler356 Yeah that's probably true I got a cheap Corsair power supply on sale for about $50 and I use that for computer troubleshooting. It really depends on how much money you have to spend, cooler master PSU's are pretty cheap and reasonably reliable.

Yeah, and if you go with a random noname $20 PSU it has a great chance of damaging the components you posible spent hundreds on. where as if you bough a name brand and at least Bronze power supply the chance of that happening drasticly drops to almost non existent

Very true a lot of people think they are getting a great deal with generic PSU's but really they could be damaging their components and also brand named power supplies usually have warranties and reasonable customer service.
