VR Headset

Go to solution Solved by Fasauceome,

I use the HTC Viva and my friend uses the Rift S, I think the Rift S is better at this time. Better visuals, despite 10Hz less on the display. Screen door effect is pretty bad in games with open sceneries, like Half Life Alyx and Onward, I imagine the wide landscapes of Fallout and Skyrim would fare poorly as well.

So I'm looking to buy my self a VR headset for about £400-500

After some research I've found a few headsets that fit my pricepoint.

Oculus Rift Touch

Oculus Rift S

HTC Vive Gen1

Now I've used the HTC Vive Gen 1 and i do like it, but the only ones i can find are all pre-owned same goes for the Rift Touch but i wanted to know which of these 3 headsets would be the better option to go for. Oh I'll mostly be playing Half Life, Fallout and Skyrim and various other games too.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

what is the screen door effect?

are you saying the Rift S is better because this effect is not there or there is less of it compared to the HTC Vive?

Objects that are small or far away look like they are through a screen door, because the pixel density is too low. It is possible to see the individual pixels of the Vive somewhat easily and they become a small issue over distance.

Yes, it's not completely gone but the effect is significantly minimized. The only mainstream headset that doesn't have it really is the Index

Would a 2080S and 8600k be up to standared to play/use VR

Absolutely. The minimum playable spec, in my experience, is a 4 core CPU that has decent clocks and a GTX 1060 3GB or RX 570/470.

Okay what about the resolution difference between the headsets? is Rift S still superior even though it does have less resolution then the other 2 headsets?

I don't know what you mean by that, the Rift S has a higher resolution than the Vive, which is what makes the screen door effect go away
