Blinding white light

I purchased an Acer XF270HU (the TN version) and I am coming from a 10 year old Acer h243.  First off this thing is HUGE.  I am not sure I should  have gone this big.  No dead pixels, no light bleed.  Fairly OK on black uniformity. Not as nice on grey, but still pretty good.  However, the whites.. OMG their are like blinding.  I have turned the brightness to 5, and the contrast to 30.  I have tried contrast at 20.  But when I look at something like this forum that has a lot of white and light grey I feel like I could get a tan.  Is this normal?  Is there a way to mitigate this?

 

FYI.. if anyone has this monitor and has some good color settings for it I could sure use the help there too.

even if one does, it doesn't mean that you will yield the same colors because of manufacturing differences

 

And for the brightness, I'm pretty much using always close to lowest brightness settings on my dells, so not too unusual to turn it way down imo
