ok so i know that xeons a very viable alternative to getting i5 and i7s, but can you get any random old xeon and use it in a rig? eg some one with faaaaaaaaaaaaaar too much money could get something like this and use it

You can... I wouldn't...

For gaming, it won't use the cores, the same as it won't normally use the 8 cores on an AMD CPU

For general use, why would you spend that much for internetting? :P

It would work, and it's effectively a powerful CPU, but it's pointless for gaming.

Yes, you can. The difference with xeons and consumer cpus is the ability to use ecc memory, 24/7/366 stability, and some virtualization features and whatnot. 

Are they all great? No. There are a great variety and some that would be easily outperformed by a modern celeron.
