Hey, so I have a pretty low end potato laptop with i3 4005U, 4 gigs of ram (1600mhz most probably) and Intel HD Graphics 4400.

I installed GTA 5 (epic games store) and everytime I try to play it I get random fps drops.

I hooked up a XTU (intel Extreme Tuning Utility) and I kept it open as I play GTA 5.

Check the attached image.

Anyone got any solutions?

and no, I can't buy a new pc/laptop rn

EDIT: soz im new here don't know where to put this

I would recon it's because you're using an iGPU, while the requirements are low for GTA V, it still recommends an external GPU in the minimum requirements.

Gaming Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3800x   |  GPU: Asus ROG STRIX 2080 SUPER Advanced (2115Mhz Core | 9251Mhz Memory) |  Motherboard: Asus X570 TUF GAMING-PLUS  |  RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3600MHz 16GB  |  PSU: Corsair RM850x  |  Storage: 1TB ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro, 250GB Samsung 840 Evo, 500GB Samsung 840 Evo  |  Cooler: Corsair H115i Pro XT  |  Case: Lian Li PC-O11

Peripherals:

Monitor: LG 34GK950F  |  Sound: Sennheiser HD 598  |  Mic: Blue Yeti  |  Keyboard: Corsair K95 RGB Platinum  |  Mouse: Logitech G502

Laptop:

Not really. The CPU and iGPU have a grand total of 15 watts of power to share. No more, no less. And your GPU clockspeed is most certainly dropping at the times the CPU is dropping in utilization.

will underclocking solve the issue? i suppose the temperature isn't the problem here, right?

Your temp looks steady, does it go higher than the 70Cish that it shows? The max temp for that is 100C, so it looks unlikely that you're thermal throttling, so I think all undervolting will do is just slow you down more, since your clock speed is very low to begin with.

Well actually no. The maximum recorded temperature I ever got is around 75 degrees celsius. Maybe 78 on the higher end. Doesn't go any hotter than that

Then you're under the max temp of 100C, so likely you're not thermal throttling. And if you were, I believe that it would be shown on that graph (you'd see you temp rise, then it would suddenly start to drop along with the clock speed).

Underclocking won't solve my issue? I thought my CPU would be more stable or something

Should I, limit my framerate to minimize the drop?

What do you mean? I don't think that will change much. You can try I suppose.

It's not that your CPU is unstable, it's that you're CPU + iGPU only have a combined 15W of power, and are having a hard time keeping up. For reference my 2080S and 3800x are pulling over 300W together. You're laptop is struggling to keep up. Right now it doesn't appear that thermals are an issue, so all underclocking will do is make your CPU run slower.

Underclocking is not possible and won't do anything. The issue is power limit throttling, not thermal throttling. All you can do is optimize settings and reduce the image quality with .ini edits. Check LowSpecGamer on youtube for that.

I did try and nothing significant happened

Oh alright, I get the point now. Thanks for clearing it up!

Sure I'll try that soon
