External Game Drive

Hi All,

I'm off to college soon, and will be getting a capable laptop as I am going into engineering (likely a Zephyrus Duo 15 when it comes out). I would like to avoid filling up the internal (and expensive) NVME storage on the laptop with games, so I want to get an external drive for them.

A few questions:

- Should I consider something "rugged" as I will likely be traveling with the drive a decent amount, or is it sufficient to make some case out of foam?

- Hard drive or SSD? SSD is much more expensive, but will I see a major improvement from this as opposed to a hard drive in terms of game performance?

- Are there different speeds of external drives? 5400RPM, 7200RPM, etc.

- Interface? Is USB 3.0 good enough, or should I be looking for something with USB C 3.2?

- How does the interface for an external drive work with various game services? Steam, Battlenet, Riot etc.

- Anything else I should know?

the faster the speed of the drive the faster the games will load, dont buy a 5400 rpm hdd they're terribly outdated and slow for today's standards. a 7.2k drive is still ok if you are looking for bulk storage. i say go for something like a wd black p10 should be fine (or any reputable ssd brand), and if you are willing to spend more the p50 is way faster and smaller too.

can you say what your budget for the drive

how many games you want to store ?

Budget probably max 150 USD, preferably around 100 USD.

I've got a pretty decent amount of games, I'd say 4 TB would be a good size, 2 would work but wouldn't be great in the long term.

you can get a 5tb for less than 100usd on black friday

but it will be slow for launching games for that you need an ssd but the 2tb ones are still expensive
