I’m looking to buy a laptop but can’t figure out what I want/need

im looking at the Huawei  matebook d14 2020 and acer aspire 5

Huawei (700eur) r5 3500u 8gb ram 512gb sad Vega 8

acer(900eur) i7 10th gen 16gb ram mx350 512gb ssd

I don’t know what specs I need or what I want

but what I really like bout the Huawei is usb c charging and the Huawei capabilities like file transfer and phone mirror onscreen. Because I have a Huawei phone

but the acer has better specs

my use:

Programming(vs studio)

simple 2d game dev

watching  yt or Netflix

maybe some simple gaming but not prioritized (gta low settings)

Honestly I'd get a used or refurbished ThinkPad from sellers like notebooksbilliger.de

Why? Because both models you have mentioned are almost impossible to open up without breaking something in the process.

Once you've got used to the nipple, you don't want a slow trackpad anymore.

Also there is that satisfaction of knowing you're a real coder who does not need a fancy shiny device.

But that's just me. If you want a new and shiny device, go with Huawei, ASUS, Gigabyte or better DELL and HP. Acer is and always was trash (my opinion).

Depends, the one from Acer has the better graphics card and more ports for overall better connectivity without needing a dongle. on the other hand, the Huawei is likely to have a longer battery life because of integrated graphics. Both cpus are pretty capable so no worriers with either of them. If you already have a USB-C dongle then the Huawei would be a better choice, given that the Acer unit is more expensive. I would look at the warranty guidelines and who has the better support network. I have only ever used Huawei LTE dongles and tablets, both reliable. My experience with Acer has always been bad, not always right away but several years into using a product with bad customer service. For example 11 pixel errors on a 32 inch screen (1080p), very noticable and still within the 3 yr warranty period, no replacement was offered, even though a special pixel free package was bought with the monitor. I have other stories of pcs with slots that came loose during shipping etc. (plenty of bad experiences with Acer from friends and family members), personally I haven't bought an Acer device since '98.

It really comes down to what you need, maybe look for reviews that show how well the laptops are constructed and the feel of the keyboard as you will type on it a lot. For Linux, the Geforce MX graphics in the Acer is more compatible than AMD's APU, however that may change in the future. Other than that, both are fairly equal in overall performance. The extra Ram in the Acer is kind of a waste given that you cannot do any serious gaming or production workloads with that graphics card anyways.
