Very new to servers and have decided that I want to implement one for home use. Have any recommendations?

I am fine to build it myself but pre built options are a possibility.

My price range is flexible. Just keep in mind it for home use only (Games, movies pictures and documents).

Edit: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=617&products_id=19683 is this a good option? I know its CPU is relatively underpowered but I don't think that is a huge issue.

Desktop:  MSi GTX 680 Lightning - MSi Mpower Z77- i7 3770k - Asus Xonar DGX  - 16Gb Ares Ram - GX 750w PSU

Laptop: MSi GE 60 - GTX 765m - i74700MQ - 8gb ram

I feel that you could get much more performance for that price.  If that's all you need for performance, you can get it for cheaper.

I would build one. If you live in the US then here are some parts from Newegg.

All the parts you need. Can change some things around but this is pretty powerful for what you want.

Maybe add some more hard drives if you want. The SSD is not needed but it is useful for things like Minecraft servers.

Also the reason I linked a 1U is because if you ever want to do colocation (have it hosted at a data center) then it would be the cheapest for the job!

Total price around $1,600

Thanks for the help. I live in Australia so it is a bit more expensive but I can factor that in.

Lets just back up a sec.

The word server gets thrown around a bit to much, when you say for 'home use' exactly what do you want it to do?

Do you want centralized storage and that's all so all your computers have a central point for all their mass data? Or did you have some specific tasks you want it to do?

You might just be in the market for a NAS and that changes things a lot :)

Well its main use will mainly be for file storage and full system backups of multiple pc's.

then a cheaper option would be a NAS IMO. Synology have their own Sync applications for backups but you can use any Sync app like SyncToy or something similar. I would look at a NAS rather than a 'server' and it looks like it will do everything you want it to and at a lot cheaper price tag :)

Any pre built NAS's that you would recommend?
