Stack up items on Taskbar

So when the taskbar is in it's natural habitat - the bottom of the screen - you can extend it and have multiple rows of shortcuts. However, that is for some reason not possible while it's on the left or right side. It looks really stupid when I have to use that scroll-thingy to get to my other apps. I'm guessing there's some way to mess with windows registry to make it work
