Nas Enclosure Question.

I'm a newbie, would like to know how a NAS enclosure works. Is it directly plug in the ethernet cable and then throw in couples of hdd inside. Then we are ready to go? Transfering data only limited to Networking cable? if something like the Seagate NAS which linus unboxed recently, the USB ports can use to transfer file from NAS to PC?
