So I was helping a friend of mine build a pc and I haven't built one in like 4 years so I'm a little rusty. The problem is that when I boot up the pc, it won't start at all. The fans won't start but the motherboard shows a light. I don't know if I need to get a different PSU because motherboard has a 8+4 pin on the top left.

Specs:

 AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Asus PRIME X570-P

G.Skill Ripjaws 2 x 8 GB DDR4-3600 memory

XFX Radeon RX 580 8 GB GTS XXX ED Video Card

EVga BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

A light? As in a code light?
motherboards seem to have 3 common ways to report errors: light codes, beep codes or digital readout codes.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I couldn't see the light properly It was hidden behind the graphics card. I have to ask my friend to reinstall the PSU cables to see what colors they are.

Perhaps find the motherboard manual and look things up.  Motherboards have some sort of debug system normally but they vary by board.

I found out that the light is only for cosmetic purposes. It's not for the debug system.

Crud.  That’s useless then.  Only one reason I hate rgb.

you should have enough PSU, assuming the thing is working correctly.  Checking all the cable and slot connections is generally a first step.  If those are done incorrectly there’s no chance of things working.

My friend ordered an adapter because the motherboard has a 12 pin on the top left. That didn't work either so I'm thinking it could be wattage.

12 pin?  As in really really old main board power? Or 8+4 cpu power?

if this is the board

top left would be cpu power.  The extra 4 pins aren’t actually needed.  That’s just for extreme overclocking.  You can put 300+w through the 8 pin.

Sorry it's the 8+4 pin

Heh.  Figured out it must be and updated my post but you posted while I was doing it.  If all the guy had was a single 4 pin for cpu power you could be right
