So I had an older set up, it was working fine until recently. One day, I tried to turn it on and the lights flashed, fans spun for about a second, and then everything died. Tried to figure this one out myself (I couldn't), then asked my brother. When we were troubleshooting, he brought over his computer as well; this is important later. He was trying to confirm that the motherboard was receiving enough power, and decided to swap his PSU out for mine. It worked fine. So I went out and bought a new SeaSonic PSU (cause some Canadian kept telling me aboot it). Plugged it up into my computer and the same issue happened. We assumed we had bad luck and bought a faulty PSU, so we bought a second on (the same model). Plugged the new one up, then the same issue happened again.

I let the situation marinate for about a month, and just decided to buy a new rig, mostly since my CPU was getting up there. Now, I am trying to do a test before putting it in the case, and am running into the same issue. Currently the only thing that is the same is the second PSU I bought, and the graphics cards. Neither my brother nor myself can figure out what is going wrong.

I just bought a new Ryzen 3600X 3.8GHz 6 core, an Asus PRIME X570-PRO ATX AM4, Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200, SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Gold 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular. The old GPU is a GTX 960.

I have tried booting it with and without the GPU, and the same issue happens. Any help is appreciated.

“It doesn’t work” is a pretty generic symptom.  Could be lots of reasons.  Correlation is not causality.   Just because your first computer stopped working and your second computer has a similar looking problem doesn’t mean they are the same.

the first step is generally to see if there are any error messages.  It can speed things up if there are any.  Does the motherboard produce any beeps or flashing LEDs or perhaps there is even a little digital readout that flashes a code?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Unfortunately, that is all I have. I turn the computer on, the lights and fans turn on for a second (no exaggerations) and then everything turns off. No time to figure out any flashing because it could just be flashing on boot, and no beeps.

The problem is that it does not stay on long enough figure anything out.

exactly.  Which lights? Ones on the motherboard?  In what order?  Motherboards have debug systems.  These systems report on what the motherboard is doing and if there is a problem.

There generally speaking are three types:

-digital readout (which will produce a code number)

-beep codes (old school.  Kind of a Morse code thing)

-light codes (what I think you may have)

It’s true the lights will go on and off only briefly.  Digital readouts and beep codes are like that too.
if they flash on and off too quickly or do whatever they do, you may have to take notes or something.  To make it more fun, while there is some standardization for beep codes the others are often manufacturer or even motherboard specific, so what they mean will have to be looked up in the manual.

Sorry for any confusion. the lights that turn on are the ones for the fans and other additional RGB lighting. There are four hardware LEDs by the power switch, however they never turn on, flash or do anything. Those are the only debug indicators on the board. I know that the board does have a speaker, however there are no tones that are produced.

So the motherboard is throwing no errors.  It’s possible as far as the motherboard is aware it’s working correctly then.   This implies a software issue.

@Bombastinator,

First, thank you for all your help. After milling about for a while testing a few things, I bought a new PSU, and that fixed everything.

Second, sorry for not getting back to this post. Was just happy to have a computer again.

No worries.  It’s how it usually goes.  Happy computing :)
