eGPU bottlenecks

I have a laptop with thunderbolt 3 so I was thinking of using an eGPU enclosure to improve gaming performance. Considering that it's only limited to 4 PCIE lanes, at what point does the graphics card become significantly bottlenecked by this? (assuming ideal conditions, no other bottlenecks and using a display connected to the graphics card).
