Hi,

 

So my pc has a 9700K running at 4.8GHz, a ASUS Maximus XI Code, 32GB of Corsair Dominator platinum ram (rated at 3600MHz), and a EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 Hybrid. I’ve had an issue where my PC crashes when enabling XMP (I’ve tried XMP I and XMP II) since I upgraded to the 9700K, but until now I’ve just ignored it run at stock RAM speeds. I’m not sure what to do. I’ve tried disabling my CPU overclock but it still crashes. Any tips?

Well, first of all, have you upgraded the BIOS at all? Memory compatibility tends to be more stable on the latest revisions. Also, did you tune the voltage on the RAM so it might help stability? I haven't had luck running it on auto myself.

Another thing, if you OCed the CPU core clock instead of the multiplier, that might cause memory instability as well

Add a bit more dram voltage, say up to 1.4v, and increase VCCSA and VCCIO to 1.2.

Yes, I have the BIOS updated. I’ll try upping the voltage, but I ran 3600MHz with stock (preset) voltage when I was on my Z270 board with my old 7700K. As far as the CPU overclock, I did use the multiplayer, however even with the CPU overclock disabled it still crashes.

Is it recommended to use XMP I or XMP II?

XMP II - Default XMP timings”

 

XMP I is the same XMP profile found on older ASUS motherboards.

Each CPU is uniquely different -- the CPU "silicon lottery."

The motherboard also plays part role.

 

It looks like the Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) within your i7-7700K is better than the IMC in your i7-9700K.

DDR4-3600 can only be obtained by overclocking the CPU's IMC.

i7-9700K is only rated up until DDR4-2666, which does not require overclocking.

 

Try this:

  • Enable XMP for DDR4-3600 frequency, so the timings + voltages are set for you
  • With XMP still enabled, MANUALLY set the DRAM frequency to...say... DDR4-3466 or DDR4-3400.
  • See if any of those lower frequencies are stable

Ah yes, I forgot about IMC. I just assumed that these newer CPUs would just somehow be better built for higher RAM frequencies lol. Anyways, I’ve been running it at 3400MHz now and it seems to be fine. I’ll run it for the next few hours to be sure of course. Kinda sucks that I can’t use all 3600MHz, but I suppose it’ll only be a difference of a few frames in games. Thanks!

I'm currently running the same cpu 9700
i'm running ddr4-3200.
If it's true the CPU is not allowing the Ram speed to go past 2666, which frequency should i set it to for 3200 ?

No the CPU can run / operate over DDR4-2666.

It's just Intel no guaranteeing anything above the official DDR4-2666 spec, and if you go over and kill something, it is on you, not Intel.

 

It's like buying a car, and you decide to engine/power mods...the engine/block can handle more power, just if you do mods, and it blows up...then it's on you.

If the car is rated for 350 HP, you aren't guaranteed how much extra power you can add before it becomes unstable. +5 HP? +100 HP?

 

On my i7-8086K, it is also officially rated for DDR4-2666, but I'm running a custom DRAM OC (i.e. not using XMP), and I'm running my 32GB of RAM at DDR4-3600. XMP is rated only for DDR4-3000.

 

If it is stable a DDR4-3200 with XMP, then leave it running at.

You can also try pushing them further, if you want.

 

In OP's case, XMP @ DDR4-3600  is NOT stable for them.

umm ok, but i can't run XMP. the PC crashes, when i run XMP it will run about 5 min and the ram will be set for 3200. So i manually need to up the voltage for ram im assuming for it to work? buys 3200 speed only getting 2666. hmmmm

What is the kit's DRAM voltage rated at when XMP is enabled?

I guess, while I'm asking, what is the kit model #?
Default DRAM voltage, JEDEC spec, is 1.200V.
XMP usually sets the voltage to 1.35V, so double check that.
