I'm looking at building my first NAS/home server. I am looking at combining some of the following:

- Media server (est. current max of 4 users at once)

- VPN

- Data backup

I have considered the Synology 4 bay DS418 but am currently leaning towards building my own as i'd like to learn a few things about the area and have greater flexibility to update/upgrade in the future.

The components I'm currently thinking of are below. Please let me know if the selected items would work for my application or if there are better alternatives out there.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3200G

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Gaming X

RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB kit DDR4-2666

Case: Antec P101 Silent

Power supply: Thermaltake 550W LitePower Gen 2

Storage: Seagate IronWolf's between 4&10TB

Thanks in advance.

Doing it this way would give you more flexibility for sure however its also much more complex to setup initially. One of the major plus points to a Synology & DSM is how easy everything is to setup.

What OS do you plan on running?

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

At this stage im leaning towards running unraid and will be utilising things like plex, radarr, sonarr, nextcloud & deluge

I'm looking into the need to add an SSD for cache storage. Would you have any recommendations here.
