Hi!

So i'm having issues with installing windows on my samsung 970 evo plus ssd drive. I thought of putting it in my old pc to partition it there and then put it back in my new pc. Is that a good idea?

Also if i do that will the ssd stay at 1tb or will files be added on to the ssd because i connected it to my old pc and partitioned it? Woould love a completely unused nvme drive when i sue it on my new pc.

Suggestions would be appreciated :)

That would not work as the installer would still need to allocate space. What board and CPU are you running?

What? You're right in saying it wouldn't work but not for that reason. Windows doesn't care what else is on the drive as long as it has enough space to fit Windows on.

The reason that wouldn't work is because Windows creates additional partitions at install time for the bootloader files and for WinRE. If you partition it manually there's a chance Windows will install but be unable to boot afterwards since it wouldn't create the bootloader partition and wouldn't be able to install a valid boot table.

Can you explain exactly what the issue you're having is because there's no reason that your NVMe can't be used as a boot drive by Windows, you must have another issue that's causing this problem.

Ok so, yesterday i built a new pc, everything shows up in bios. the ssd fans, gpu cpu everything. I plug the Windows usb into the pc to install windows. When i'm asked to choose a storage device to download windows on it shows an unalocated drive/device with 0mb. I can't do anything with that, so i go back to bios and the ssd is gone like it wasn't connected. It's like the nvme ssd disconnects from the motherboard or something whenever i use a different boot device. (it shows up again in bios after another reboot). I thought of maybe downloading storage drivers or even moving it to a different nvme slot. I really don't know what to do anymore... someone recommended me to partition it on my older pc and then move it to my new build and download windows on it that way. i don't know anymore

Unallocated is perfectly normal for a brand new drive however it does sound like you have other issues anyway. Check the boards manual to make sure there isn't a preferred slot for the drive in a single drive configuration and also update the BIOS to the latest available version then see if the problem goes away after that.

I've placed it in the second nvme slot and the same problem occured. I'm gonna update the bios and try then. If it still shows up then i think i'm gonna RMA it.
