The simple problem here is that my mothers laptop is not getting a stable connection when other computers on the network are even turned on, how can i fix this.

Is there any software that i could use to monitor the traffic on my modem? I need this for two reasons, 1. i want to be able to show evidence that i am not the one slowing down the connection (i am always suspect one when the connection is slow, even if my PC is not on) 2. As a tool for trouble shooting, and maybe as a tool. My mother needs a stable connection so she can work.

I don't need to be NSA here, i don't need to know the contents of the traffic, just the computer it is going to, and being sent out of, and the quantity. And of course, it would be nice if the software wouldn't slow the network down.

I know that this network doesn't need enterprise kit, so it would be nice if the software was just some opensource thing, simple UI and usage.

There are only 3 computers and one printer on the network, i want to prioritize the connection of my mothers computer without crippling the others. I don't mind having my connection slow down a bit when that laptop is in use (note, a small amount, if i am cut off i will mind).

X fast LAN gave my PC and the other laptop (Xfast LAN not installed) a good boost, but my mothers laptop is not getting a decent connection as long as the others are even turned on. And this has been happening before Xfast LAN, i don't think getting rid of it will help a bit (<hah pun).

That is the only solution i could come up by my self, do tell if other solutions are available. And i almost forgot, i want the software installation to be on this PC only, i cant get my mothers permission to install any software on her laptop that could possibly solve this problem. If i can fix this i am just gonna have to star shutting my PC down every time she needs to work, and then listen to the complaining if stuff doesn't work.

The second laptop doesn't matter, it is never used for anything that tasks the network.

I don't know what kind of setup you have, but maybe there is (electrical) interference. If you have a problem just by turning things on (without the other computers sending traffic), then it is probably interference.

Well, the other laptop uses a wireless as well, my PC and the printer are wired, if it is interference, how can i fix it. The other laptop may not use much bandwidth but it is still in use, and it does lose connection every now and the as well, then the modem needs to restarted for it to connect again.

BTW her laptop is closer than the other one, but the other laptop is some ROG laptop so my guess is it has quite a robust wireless.

There's free program called Traffic Shaper XP with which you can make rules how computers use internet. As in change how much each uses brandwidth. Each machine would need own rule though.
