You seem like you are not too sure about setting up this server, once you buy it are you going to be able to configure this yourself (install hypervisor, install OS, install and run the game servers etc)? are you getting help from someone? Have you considered the fact that once it's set up and in your home network that your entire network is vulnerable to attacks from the internet? do you have a plan to secure your home network(Firewalls, VLANS etc)?

Well it's not that I'm not sure, because I've been wanting to do this for awhile it's just I have no idea about servers and the differences between them.

I'm going to do it all myself because I know how to put everything together I just don't know what parts to get exactly

Yeah I've considered that, I was thinking if I can I would run a VPN off the server itself, not sure if that would work tho. Other then that I haven't thought about it to much. But I'll do some more research to better protect it.

Yeah everything is on one server with 2012r2

As long as hyper-v is compatible with everything I wouldn't mind using it. I'll do some research on it and proxmox

I think I should run raid because that just "tricks" the system in thinking they're one drive right?

Yea the raid will make one disk with redundancy and sometimes better speed.

So I've been looking around and I'm not finding an exact answer to my question I've looked up. Is hypervisor something that completely replaces an OS on the machine or do I install and os and hypervisor is like an app on the machine? Because when I Google it it just says "how to install hypervisor on windows 10"

For serers, you install the hypervisor on the host like any other os, then you install vms that you run your programs in on top of the hypervisor.

So I can install an OS on the same machine that hypervisor is installed on or do I have to setup another thing to run a different os that connects to hypervisor?

You install a os on the hypervisor in a vm.

You manage the hypervisor in a web interface or though a program on a different computer.

So if I only have one machine I can't have hypervisor and linux? Only if I have more then one? Or is a VM on the same machine?

You can run as many vms as you want in the hypervisor. So you can run linux and windows on the same system at one.

Go play with hyper-v on your main workstation, it works about the same.

I've been messing around with hypervisor the version windows lets you just install with cmd and it's amazing. Glad I know about it now.
Also I've been browsing around ebay trying to see if there's a better deal like this but I honestly have no clue if it is. If you could take a look at it and tell me that would be great! And if it's a good deal maybe even find one that you personally would buy off of ebay. Thanks for the help!

That price looks simmilar for that listing. If you want to save a bit, id go 1st gen epyc, and get either a used server, or go diy with a board and put it in a 4u case.

There are a good amount of boards like this on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-KNPA-U16-Socket-SP3-DDR4-EEB-Server-Motherboard-for-AMD-EPYC-7000-Series/373026239357?epid=23029763736&hash=item56da18b37d:g:fM8AAOSwaJFenFd0

and add a cpu, and ram, and put it in a case and you have a full system. I like the dell and hp systems as you normally get more feautres and don't have to worry about weird issues when building.
