With Steam OS hot in development, a question often proposed by my peers and myself is what games are actually available? Aside from the majority of Indie games and arcade games (which are certainly enjoyable to play) there is only a handful of Higher End games currently available, Metro Last Light being most notable in my opinion. Are companies developing games now making them available to Linux, and are games already released capable of being adapted to Linux? to be able to cut the $100 OS price from a build would be a major breakthrough to persuade a concole to pc conversion, but as of now its a must if you plan on playing AAA titles. Where do you see the future of Linux Gaming and Stem OS going? pardon any errors made on my part but I'm happy to learn about info I've said wrongly.

The same as before but I hope I'm wrong, WINE has improved massively and if you have time you can get any game working.

Or at least I can.

I had never heard of that program and am glad that I did. What games have you gotten working with it? Is there a performance difference?

Linux is an open platform and Valve decided to use it as a platform for their OS. IT is a great incentive to have Linux as an OS and play games off it ude to no real price tag but it isnt accessible as common OS sytems out there. I think the major breakthrough will be once someone makes a distro easy to use, easy to install, and provides helpfull hints and provides excellent teaching tools (in a marketting standpoint). We grew up learning either Windows or MAC OS. A good majority werent taught about Linux. I cant say for certain where it stands now but the general computer users stick to what is known.

The Steam OS is fantastic. Theyre are adding more and more features that make a PC media center seem more attractive. Many users had their own variations and Microsoft had their media center as well but i think Steam is streamlining it to be easy to use for general users and advanced enough for others. I see it being used as a fantastic media center and believe it will be here for a long time. I believe since it's on linux, people should be able to make apps for it, so thats what im looking forward to myself. What apps will dev's make for AAA games that will be easy to access through a platform like steam. I am looking forward to that more so than anything else.

I hope this helped, not an expert but this is where im leaning towards.

Too many to list but take a list at their top 10 lists (platinum for games that work with virtually no issues, then gold for a little bit of issues, and so on)http://appdb.winehq.org
As above, the only games I havent tried are the battlefield games and sims 3 but have a look at my steam id and if its on there its been working and many more.As I said its whether you have the time to work the problems out, I had people complaining about stutter and lag using it but most games for me run at 10 fps better and just seem quicker in general.

True but I think Wine only goes as far as DX9 (I think) So the extra performance could be tied to just running with a lot of newer features off by default

I hope it keeps improving and becomes more prevalent than Mac. I don't think it will ever be more prevalent than Windows, but could certainly be an option to be considered in the future.

Yeah directx 10 on the way but I've ran native directx 9 and I've sometimes have to force dx9 in Windows but as I said just feels buttery smooth, maybe the placebo effect.

There's also a workaround to get dx11 working but haven't had to use it.

Steam for Linux was in beta for around 4 to 5 months and once it had come out of beta we had around 50-ish games you could already download and install onto your Linux system via Steam. Fast forward to today and you can download over 500 titles. This surge in popularity for Linux has happened over a very short amount of time. We also have SteamOS coming into the picture which will be a Linux Distribution targeted at systems that will be run in the living room like games consoles... this also means more games once it grows in popularity.

This isnt exactly due to steam this was just a natural evolution due to Linux user coding left for dead and valve seeing an untapped source, along with the influx of vista movers looking something different and Unity of course, not in that ordered.
