I live in a house that has been separated into 4 different rental units with their own modem and router. The internet speed is pretty bad and streaming ends up being unwatchable. Each unit has their own provider account and separate hardware, but it looks like it's all connected from the same line. The line comes into the building to a Extreme Broadband IPA1008D-RSVF 8 way splitter, and from there goes to the individual units through the different outputs on the splitter. I'm using a NETGEAR Nighthawk Dual-band AC1900 modem/router and then use ethernet to the PC.

Is there a better type of junction for this kind of home setup? I just hope there is an option better than finding a new place.

Thank you for any help.

Are you paying the isp separately or the landlord?  If you’re paying the isp separately talk to the isp.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I pay the ISP separately. They've tested the connection and pretty much just confirmed that there's a lot of signal loss, but didn't give any input about fixing it.

Heh.  Of course not.  It’s on them to provide signal which will cost them money.  You’re witnessing “hope the problem goes away” mode.  The landlord has provided equipment to route the network internally but it’s not holding up.  There appears to be the choice of using the data from the isp to prove to the landlord he’s not holding up his end and getting him to fix his system, using the data from the ISP to get a separate connection bolted to the outside of the house (which the landlord will HATE and has a good deal of power over) or finding a place where these problems are not problems.  The landlord has power over what the isp can do to the building, and you have power over the landlord.

Thanks for the info!

Knowing EXACTLY how the chain works in your specific are (which is going to be different from mine and has a habit of changing frequently and without warning) is critically important. As a general rule the landlord has a lot of power until the lease is signed at which point the tenant has the majority of the power.  That power is very specific and limited though.  Moving within the chain correctly is critical.
