Asus N53S, idle temperature (CPU ~50 degrees Celsius), minimal load (80-90 degrees); maximum load (near-instant shutdown)

This only started happening recently, wtf is going on.

Either your fan is not spinning, or its time to clean the inside and reapply thermal paste.

Well under minimal load it produces jet-engine-like sounds so it's definitely spinning.

Guess I'll clean it up inside, I just figured the change wouldn't be so sudden. I expected heat issues to build up over time, but I went from no issues to a rather large issue. =/

dissemble your laptop, clean your fan and heatsink output(from inside). My laptop went down few degree after I've done it.  Also get a better laptop cooler, mine a unknown brand but it is called "T5", 5 fans, 1x 120mm and 4 x 50mm, went down another 5~10 degree(Hue). And if possible, clean the thermal compound and apply new one.

Compressed air though the vents, or take it apart then clean it fully

If it's out of warranty, then go ahead and remove the heatpipe, vacum, and reapply thermal paste

It's most likely dust, in fact it's pretty much always the cause of high temps at idle. If it's not dust then it could be that you need remount the heatsink and reapply the thermal paste, but it's far more likely that dust build up is the problem.

I would recommend opening up the laptop and using compressed air to clear out the dust.
