Custom External Drive?

I am thinking about custom building an external drive, the main idea is for it to house multiple ssds so that it can be run in raid and have physical redundancy. 

 

Since I'm in the planning phase the main concern I have is if a single usb port would be able to provide enough power to run up to 4 drives at the same time. If that's not possible the other option would be to design it in a less portable format with a small power supply, which would be easier but wouldn't be as flexible and convenient. I haven't been able to find what the power draw 

 

I'm wondering if anyone has done anything similar or if there is anything similar already on the market.

You can't have a multi-drive only USB powered setup. There are 2 or 4 drive enclosures on amazon

plus, it's a custom storage not a custom drive.

 

why is portability a convenience? Most convenient solution would be to connect it to the internet with your own cloud storage. Can be accest remotely by phone, tablet, labtop, or in the office.
