I have 13 SAS 3.84 SSD Drives laying around in my office desk removed from one of our SAN storage. I am planning to build a budget NAS storage using them.

I have already fixed about using following components after watching this Video, this video helped me alot in concluding most of my doubts. But still not able to find few items in building my NAS.

AMD Ryzen 3 3200 processor

motherboard - any suggestions would be helpful, in finding right motherboard.

16gb RAM

120GB SSD as OS drive

but confused what HBA/RAID controller card and cables to be used for SAS SSD drives, as most of the PC motherboards doesn’t support SAS drives/protocols. Can someone help me?

Id get a used server. You can get lots of cheap servers with 24x sas bays on the front and put all your drives in there.

But if you want diy, almost any sas hba will work fine here. Are the drives 12gbit? If so, you want a 12gbit sas card for the extra speed.

How fast does the nas need to be? Your gonna want a faster system if you want to take advanage of those drives.

But if its a low speed nas, Id sell those drives, nad buy some hdds.

I want to use this as my home NAS storage for media, I can use my rack mounted NAS storage I have in office if I can, but I don’t want a server class machines at home.

Yes I want to build a PC with windows/freenas, yes they are 12gbps drives, I looking for a budget build I guess 12gbps SAS card costs few extra bucks. I can settle with 6gbps cards.

As i I mentioned earlier it’s just a home media server.

Whats the exact drive model, probably 300-600 dollars each.

For a home nas your are probably much better off selling these drives and buying a better home nas setup.

Do you have a budget for the build?

I don’t have the model number handy, they are in my office, have to check.

thanks I will think of selling them.

I have resisted my budget to 300-400 dollars not more than that.
