My fellow tech enthusiast,

since the COVID-19 outbreak I, like many others, have been staying at home with my family. That proved to be to big of a task for our internet and we have decided we are going to pay a little extra for the "turbo fast internet" (up to 105-150 mbps, so turbo is not the best name for it). However, that speed is not what I recive (I have contacted my ISP, they say there is nothing wrong with my internet) and my coverage is bad. What would you suggest doing to boost my internet (DIY or something within a student budget)?

Sorry for spelling errors

If you're using WiFi, check what type of WiFi it is. Wireless N can give you at most 60-70 Mb/s (megabits) if you're lucky. If you want better - use Wireless AC. For that you must have router with wifi AC support and wifi AC network card.

Or use cable. Faster, better, less problems.

I'm not entirely sure that is something you can fix. We pay for 300mbps Ethernet, and the ISP maxes out at 100mbps on a good day. We have modern hardware. They have no obligation to give you what you paid for.

You could try spending some money on a fancy router, and make sure you use Ethernet cabling, but it probably is not worth your money unless your networking hardware is ancient.

First of all, you should realize what you're experiencing is happening globally. Consumption of web content has increased and peak times tend to be for the majority of the day instead of typical after-work hours. If your neighbours are using the same ISP and saturating their own connections, everyone else's will slow down as well.

That being the case, you haven't mentioned how your internet connection is distributed in your house. Does your ISP provide a simple modem or combo-modem/router (gateway) device with a wireless access point, or are you using your own wireless router? Is your slow speed on a wired or wireless connection?

With a computer directly wired via ethernet to the modem/gateway (i.e. the piece of hardware that your ISP provides) and absolutely no other device utilizing the network, run a speed test over at DSLReports.com and tell us your results.

I have a Technicolor router that my provider threw at me and I have been thinking of getting something better for a while now. I am using wireless connection, but I never expected my speed to be more than 4 times slower than what was advertised (that is when everything works). I figured speed would be lower now, but not that my internet would be unusable.
