Is X570 “future proof” so it makes it worth the money

Thank you LFC!!!

Do you cconsider my build that mediocer as toasty99 says? Should I re-consider some stuff?

You can stay with great 5 3600

Change GPU to RX5700XT whatever model you want (because your budget I suggest MSI)

MoB Asus Prime-P

So Ryzen 5 3600 160$ + MsiRx5700XT 360$ + Asus X570 Prime-P 160$

With 680$ you are Great

Cut from PSU

Buy 650watt

Choose Cheap Gskill Ram etc

I think with this way you don't need to upgrade in the future for a long time and you are with the last word of technology... Pcle 4 etc..

With 100 $ more... And if it is necessary...

17 minutes ago, Lfc said:

Agree.! And a hundred dollars more you can buy better GPU from 1660...

So with 150 more $ you can buy Asus Prime X570-P  & Radeon sapphire pulse Rx5700xt and you are GREAT

you can easy cut this money from other parts

So you are saying that I should stick to the X570 considering my build and not cut down to B450?

No, pcie 4 is none issue, but x570 should allow upgrade to a ryzen 4000 or 3950 after price drops from am5 socket coming out in few years

Yes, X570 is a total waste of money for this build.

You're also approaching this build really poorly to be honest. You don't have the budget to future proof but you don't want to upgrade every 3 years. That's just not the right approach.

You need to think of it this way: Save money now and put it towards a major upgrade in a few years.

If you don't wanna upgrade for 5+ years then you need to spend more money now. You'd need a Ryzen 3700x and a RX 5700xt or RTX 2070 at least.

There's two good ways to build PCs:

1. Go for the high end to last a while

2. Go for the budget build and upgrade every few years

If you go in the middle, you are gonna be stuck with an expensive sub par PC in a few years that cost too much, isn't good enough, and not bad enough to upgrade yet.

Also don't think you'll just be able to pop in a 3950x cheap in 3-5 years like some suggest. It *might* be possible. Or, more likely everyone else with a b350/450 or x370/470/570 will have the same idea as you and the prices will get heavily inflated for the performance it offers at that time. See i7 6700k and 7700k pricing today.

Last fall, i picked up 2700 and cheap sale priced x570.

few years we will have ryzen 5000 on new socket with pcie 5, ddr 5.  3950 should be fraction of current price and sales on ryzen 4, good budget upgrade options for x570 in 2.5-3 years.

g, if I go for the B450 do I have to update the bios for the Ryzen 5 3600?

depends on the motherboard. MSI boards with "MAX" at the end means that they are alreadu bios updtaed. Or motherboard with sticker "Ryzen 3000" are bios updated too.

Why do you think they will drop in price?

I7 6700k and 7700k are $200 still. A FX 9590 is $120 still. The 3950x is gonna be one of the top dogs on the AM4 platform. Those always command a price premium from people trying to upgrade later on.

Well, I bought ryzen 2700 for $150, missed sale for $120.  So fell by more then 50%

I7 still being 200 is big drop from 330-350 starting price.

Those i7 were also best to ever be in given platform, so retain price better.  3950 will be gen behind whatever top ryzen 4000 that fits in am4.

Top ryzen 4000 will retain price pretty well, ryzen 3000 and mid/lower end 4000 will drop.

I7-8700 is cheaper then i7-6700 from quick ebay check.  I7-8700 can be upgraded to 9900k, so price on i7-8700 didn't hold as well.

Ryzen 4950 will hold price, 3950 will drop.  Probably enough to make it cheaper to buy 3800 now and upgrade in few years to 3950 then buy it now.

That's totally different though. Those aren't notable in many ways. The best CPUs on a platform command a price premium. The 3950x in particular won't plummet in value. It's a landmark CPU. It's the first "mainstream" 16 core and might be the best CPU you can get on some of the older AM4 boards if b350/450 x370/470 don't end up supporting Ryzen 4000.

Ryzen 4000 is supposed to just be a minor improvement and I don't see them going past 16 cores. Assuming that's the case the 3950x will most likely be the second best AM4 platform CPU and the one with a little more historical value.

Those type of CPUs just don't drop in value very fast. There's no reason to own a Phenom ii 1100t yet they still sell for $100 on eBay off historical value.

The cheapest "top of the line" consumer chip in the past 10 years is the i7 2700k selling at about $80 on ebay. That goes all the way back to the i7 990x and Phenom ii 1100t in 2010.

So it's either 1200euros per 5-6 or 600 per 2-3? Isn't that quite the same?

Are the benefits that much higher in gaming or in specific apps?

You'd think this but it really depends. 3950x is the collectors value item. It's the one in 10 years you go "look I got the first mainstream 16 core". That holds up the value. The 2700k for example is the cheapest top end i7 partially because you can get a 3770k (better) or a 2600k (cheaper, about the same) on those same motherboards. "Cheapest" is still $80, or basically what a Ryzen 1600 costs new.

I think the 3900x is gonna be the one that plummets in value enough to be a good buy as a mid cycle upgrade.

If 4000 is minor, support is pretty likely, if not then 3950 is not top in platform, what ever 4000 cpu will be.  Unless amd does something like only make 12 core in ryzen 4000 I would expect it to drop.  Same as threadripper 1rst set firsts but has crashed, but 2nd gen holds some of value.

It only depend of what you want to do with it and what performance you're expecting out of it.   For my part I have an I7 4770 non K and an rx590 and I consider (or try to convince myself) it should last me another 2 years maybe 3 with the work I do and the games I play.  Do I want to upgrade ?  Of course I feel the urge to upgrade.  Do I want a powerful machine ?  Of course I want a powerful machine ... but do I need it ... probably not for now.

If I wanted to upgrade from my machine I would be going for a r5 3600x most likely with 1tb nvme gen 3 ssd and I would try to stretch the budget for at least rtx 2060 super.  As for the motherboard I would probably go for an 400 series and avoid x570 just cause of the cost unless I find a mega deal.  I would also consider keeping some components as the case, power supply and the ssd and hdd I already have making any upgrade less expensive than changing the whole computer ... in your case it seems like you're only upgrading the base system.

I9 10850K

EVGA RTX 3080 TI FTW3 ULTRA

32 Gb Crucial Balistix ddr4 3600mHz 16-18-18-38

MSI Z490 Tomahawk

Fractal Design Ion+ 860W platinum

Arctic Liquid Freezer II, 360mm

Right now I have the I5 4460 and GTX 960 with a 128gb ssd for Windows etc and 1tb HD’s for games. I mostly play moba games so I don’t have any problems, but now I installed NFS heat and faced some issues, so I am thinking of upgrading mono, cpu, gpu and ram.
I made that build back in 2015 and to be honest with you I wouldn’t like to spend 700€ every five years so I was thinking of building a pc that would last for long and maybe replace just my gpu in 5 years if I will still be into gaming like now
