Migrating OS Drive

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question:

I am planning on building an HTPC in the next couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if, once I finish building it, I'll be able to take the C: drive from my old laptop (had Win7, upgraded to Win8.1 Pro), and stick it into the new machine?

 

The HTPC's planned specs will be an AMD A10-7700K on a Gigabyte GA-F2A88X-WIFI with 8GB of RAM.

The laptop was an HP Pavilion g7, and had an old (Trinity, I think) A6 APU, 8GB of RAM, and a 500GB HDD.

 

The two possibilities I have rolling around in my head and would like input on their possibility are either:

 

1. Buy a 120GB SSD (the Kingston V300 is only $66 right now on Amazon), clone the OS onto that, and then put it in the new PC.

Or 2. Just stick the old HDD into the new PC.

 

I would much rather going with option 1, so if there is a way to do that, it would be great! But If I have to go with option 2, I just want to be sure that it'll work with the new hardware...

 

And advice would be GREAT!

I wouldn't clone an OS from a machine that has completely different hardware. (Different chipset, LAN drivers, audio, etc.) You are just asking for trouble. I would do a fresh install.

You need to do a fresh install, no if ands or butts about it.

Yeah, but how? The laptop came with Win7 pre-installed, and I got a Windows 8 Pro upgrade code for $15 in 2012, I then upgraded that to Windows 8.1 Pro last fall.... So I don't have any installation media,and even if I did, the license is for the laptop...

I just don't want to shell out $100 for new copy of Windows... :P

Also, it's kind of a Scratch-build, so where would one find foam padding to use inside for the PSU and stuff?

Looks like you might be able to download an a little program from Microsoft that can create an .ISO of WIndows 8 via your product code.

I honestly have no clue. I would try it on your existing rig, use the software to create an .ISO (if it'll accept your key) and try and do a fresh install on the new rig.
