Laptop lid settings

whenever i choose to do nothing option on what to do when lid is closed settings for my laptop. sometimes it works but sometimes after closing then reopening the lid it just shows a gray screen not completely black because theres an indicator that its still on but just stay there until i restart my laptop.how do I fix this?
