Windows XP -- Can't access Windows Update

I've created a WinXP VM for testing purposes (firewalled of course) but I can't do any Windows updates at all, because IE8's SSL is broken (can't load any SSL websites). I can't use the control panel either because I assume that plugin needs to be installed via Internet Explorer first.

Any way to install Windows Update to the control panel do I don't have to use IE, or how to fix IE's SSL?

Okay, I'm a little dense. Windows Update is called "Automatic Updates" in the Windows XP control panel 😆

Anyway I was able to activate windows as well, I think I have to download a root certificates update as well, buried somewhere in this thread:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but XP and Vista update servers have been down for a while now. I think you can download SP3 and anything released after that as packages from 3rd party sources. But doing it within Windows won't work. (I'm pretty sure I tried this with actual XP install years ago)

I got it to work, everything downloaded afaik. Especially with the PoSready 2009 registry patch. IE8 still barely works at all, but that's no suprise. Just had to use automatic updates in the control panel. After I did the root certificate updates it even activated with microsoft.
