Hi guys,

I am currently in the decision process between two laptop. And I really have troubles to decide which of those two to buy. The Alienware M15 R2 and the Razer Blade 15 Pro.

Some background data:

  • my budget is appx. 3500 €
  • Laptop will be used for gaming, light 4k video editing, as well as freelance working as project manager
  • Preferred config for both laptops would be i7 processor, RTX 2080 maxq, 16gb ram

Linux said in one of his vidoes, that he wouldn't recommend the OLED screen on the Razer. Both, the Alienware and the Razer laptops do offer configurations with OLED. As I want to start edition 4k videos, I thought I will need a 4k screen. After that video, I have the feeling that I should not go for the 4k OLED screens. In regards to 4k video editing, do I really need a 4k screen for the laptop?

Also, the Alienware does not allow to upgrade the RAM, but the Razer does. As new models are on the horizon, however delayed due to the current global situation, I am not sure whether Razer and Alienware will offer new machines soon, or to go with the configurations, mentionend above. I actually tend to the Alienware, however the non upgrade RAM might be an issue in the future, when I will increase working with 4k footage. Actually I am hoping for a new M15 r"3" with 32 gb ram.

What do you guys think?

I would personally go with the blade. Linus basically says in the review it's good, except for the OLED. Although if I remember correctly, the blades Linus got for the team back in 2016, almost everyone's had to be RMAed. You don't need the 4k screen, as you can edit with a 1080/1440 screen. You just wouldn't be about to see the full detail. I'm pretty all the editors at LTT have 4k monitors, even tho they shoot in 8k. The blade looks promising, cuz you can upgrade when you get larger projects

Thanks for the quick reply. RMA means that they had to send them back to Razer, right?

Ya. They had a variety of problems with them. As long as you have warranty (I think Razer has 1 year) you can get a working one, if any issues arise

Any links of online stores? Preferred max weight and min battery life? Need OLED or high refresh rate display? Fine without numpad?

Are you able to wait 1-2 months longer?

Sure, here you go:
Razer: https://www.razer.com/de-de/gaming-laptops/razer-blade/shop#rtx2070--fhd-144hz-8thgen--256-blk

Alienware: https://www.dell.com/de-de/shop/laptops-2-in-1-pcs/alienware-m15-r2/spd/alienware-m15-r2-laptop/n00awm15r210

Battery life is not that importan. Regarding the refresh rate, yes I will play games, mostly COD or Witcher (Cyberpunk 2077 in future). But I also will work with 4k video editing and I dont know what to do. Whether give up the oled or the refresh rate. But by now, I tend to have a higher refresh rate with a FHD screen. Numpad is not a must have.

How about weight? Preferred max weight in kg/lbs?

Well, the weight is not an issue to. The Razer Blade 15 and the Alienware M15 r2 are both around 2kg-ish. Well, the uncertainity is actually killing me, whether waiting is an viable option. Regarding the 1-2 months. are there any hidden announcements regarding newer models? Of course new 10th generation CPUs will soon be available everywhere and the geforce rtx super cards. Will that be such a performance peak, in relation to the RTX 2080 max q?

If you don't have much preferences on weight and battery life, why go for thin and light gaming laptops?

Do you need the laptop now?

The main star is Ryzen 4000 mobile. Intel 10th gen doesn't provide much improvements. Nvidia Super mobile GPUs will come also.

Well, yes it should be thin-ish. Like the Razer Blade 15 or the Alienware M15R2.

More or less yes. But if there is anything interesting in prospect, I can wait.

Since most thin and light gaming laptops aren't able to cool well, I will only recommend those with decent cooling

Can consider XMG Fusion 15. Requires some tuning+tweaking for best performance+thermals (can outperform most thin and lights), but on stock it's still pretty good. Not too expensive for a premium thin and light gaming laptop: premium build quality, long battery life, has TB3, has RGB lights (if that matters), mech kb (needs some time to get used to)

Thank you for the recommendation. It does look very good as a package. I think I will wait up to three months to see whether they will update their configuration and how the laptop situation will be by then. Currently I have the feeling that no matter which laptop I will buy now, newer ones are just behind the corner. What do you think?
