Hello LTT forum. I recently got an old pc from my parents I was going to make into a NAS. However when booting it would not display until it got to the ubuntu login screen, even if I hit delete at boot the BIOS will not display, no motherboard manufacturer logo, nothing.

So I was swapping out parts. Took out the graphics card, tried onboard with no difference. I swapped in all the RAM one stick at a time, no difference. Took out the BIOS battery, no difference. Eventually even leaving it on I stopped getting any login screen and turning it on leaves me with a black screen.

Pressing the power button for a moment did work for shutdown. I didn't need to hold it down or flip the PSU switch.

Does anyone know what the issue is? I have a slight feeling I may have shocked my motherboard because I was (foolishly) not using an anti-static strap.

I've never used an anti-static strap and I work with my PC on carpet wearing socks... I'd say you're good there ^_^ But you never know.

Anyways, I have a slight suspicion that the motherboard is bricked. If you have any spare parts laying around, you could try swapping those out to conclude that it is in fact the motherboard.

I don't have a spare motherboard sadly.

It booted to the Ubuntu login and I pressed tab a few times and it selected different things. I didn't plug in a mouse because i didn't think I'd need it for what I was doing.

So it seemed like yes, it was working. Somewhere in my meddling it just doesn't boot into anything. I've tried clearing the CMOS by removing the battery a couple times, swapped out the RAM like I mentioned.
