a good desktop microphone would be the Blue Yeti, but I don't know the range of it.

I second this. A friend and I used a Blue Yeti for a 2-man podcast a while back - not sure about the distance, but we were very happy with the quality. Not sure how much it would pick up of your mechanical keyboard if it sits on the desk though.

adding to this you could always have a wall mount for it. that would reduce the mechanical noise a bit but it would never completely eliminate it.

That's cool, I didn't know there are wallmounts for it. We've been thinking about getting an arm for it, but since we didn't game on the desk it wasn't necessary. Sure mechanical keyboard are always loud (especially clicky ones) but having the mic sitting on the desk sometimes transfers all rattling on the desk to the mic, which can be obnoxious in a voice chat.

yea you do have a point there. the only question here is if the user has a mechanical or membrane keyboard

My sister have the blue yeti, don't know the version but it's not the nano for sure as it is quite big and oblong, not round like the nano.  She said that the mike picks the sound well even while she's standing in the middle of her living room / twitch room.  I would say about 3m away.  If you want to hear it her twitch is gennastrand.
