Hello all,

I just moved in into my new apartment, and got optical fiber deployed, however, the tech guy who came and installed the fiber, decided that the best spot to put it was in the living room, which is located far from the rest of the apartment, which causes poor wifi coverage.

Here is the plan of the apartment: https://imgur.com/a/yBfA0wQ

Plus, I wanted to use the smallest bedroom as my office, and ideally I wanted to have a direct ethernet connection between my computer (desktop computer) and the router so that I get the max performance out of my internet connection.

I already deployed a powerline based solution at my parent's place because they have the same problem, and it works 99% of the time, but sometimes, the powerline plugs gets unpaired and I have to setup the whole thing again which is a pain, and there is the performance loss, it works, but at a cost.

That being said, I'm not against a very long ethernet cable that would go from the living room to the office, but that's the last resort solution to me since it requires drilling a lot of walls.

Can someone help me out figure out what the best solution is ?

Thank you in advance to those who will help me out :)

Maybe a wifi mesh or a wifi range extender?

to be honest, for a home installation this is the most logical choice for a tech guy to make without having other clear instructions from the end user (you!).

From what i see, you first need a plan, which rooms do you want to connect, and what will be connected? Like do you have iTV over the same carrier? In that case i would also run a cable for each tuner you wish to connect. And that would make other decision a lot easier as you're running cables anyhow.

Now my question to start is probably, how old is the apartment? Do you have unused PVC pipes in your fuse box? (the central place where all your breakers are)

If you do, its likely they run to a room and it should be fairly easy to pull a wire thru which will simplify the installation. Heck, if you're lucky you will find one from the place your modem is currently located to the fuse box, install a switch and wire there and connect the rest of the home from there.

If you're looking into wireless solutions, you will need at least 1 physical connection. If using repeaters, extenders of mesh doesn't matter. The only thing that differs is the amount of antenna's they can use, but in theory every 'relay' will decrease speed and increase ping.

My advice: Check if you have a neat way to run cables, if you do, connect them and see where you end up. After that fill in the gaps.

Thanks for your advice, there is unfortunately no way to use a pre existing way for the ethernet wire :( So I guess I'd be better off drilling as clean as I can, at least from the living room to my office, and I'll probably get a few routers that support meshed networking to cover the rest of the appartement wirelessly.
