ram RAM Upgrade slowing PC

recently i have upgraded my RAM from DDr3 2x 2GB to 2x8GB, after doing so my computer has been running very slowly, with activity monitor showing no obvious sign, the RAM is installed correct and is showing 16GB

the clock speed on the new ram is 1600 where as the old and the motherbaord maximum is 1333, i dont believe this to be the issue as surely it would just run at 1333? i have scanned for viruses, my rescource monitor sometimes shows high I/0 from disk, and occasional spikes in hard faults but i believe this to be normal? i have considered updating my mother board BIOS however i do not have a USB Stick that i can use to update my BIOS as of yet.

everything seems to run fine just very slowly,

specs:  motherboard - MSI H61M-P31/W8

             Old RAM: 2x 2GB SK hynix, 1Rx8 PC3-12800U-11-12-A1

              new RAM: 2 x 8GB DDR3L PC3L-12800 1600mhz CL11 non EEC-unbuffered

 

any help or advice would be greatly appricated even if its hard/blunt/calling me an idiot ( i secretely love a bit of verbal abuse    ;))

Have you tried with just 1 stick? It should still be considerably faster especially when you're in a game and browsing same time, returning to desktop etc. Have you checked virtual memory options? Try disabling it.

 

Other than that I'd check the bios options and manually set mhz and finally format.

 i will try disabling it, thanks, what do you mean finally format? i cannot set the mhz it is capped at 1333, where as my ram IS 1600 but i believe my ram would just run at 1333 which shouldn't be an issue. i will try one stick, but how would that help? and it feels kind of wrong considering ive bought two sticks which i wouldve thought to be faster?

You're just trying to eliminate the possible causes. Thats how you solve the problem. If you had one faulty stick and you always put both rams in, how would you ever single out the issue? So try different things and see if one fixes the problem, then focus on that area.

i've tried one stick and turning off the virtual memory option, still no improvement if not worse, Trying the other stick now.

well ive tried each stick individually and the 2GB x 2 initial RAM and it was just as slow as the other ram, maybe i will try reinstalling windows i have no idea what has caused this...
