I nuked my PC today. I try to do it once a year since I use my PC a lot and stuff tends to pile up. So I saved all important documents on my stick and formatted all my drives and reinstalled windows with another stick. I did something different when installing Windows. I recently sadly lost my Laptop but at least I was able to save my M.2 Drive and since that is only 256GB big I thought that was the perfect size for a C  Drive. I already have 2 500gb SSDs in my PC plus a 1tb HDD (I "upgraded" my PC slowly over the years.)

Installing went fine and there were no problems at first. Then when the PC restarted it gave me the recovery mode screen which I could not get out of. Nothing was responding. If I selected an option the screen would flash and nothing else. After pressing the restart button on my PC it booted of the Stick again. There in recovery mode I was able to just restart the PC and "continue to Windows". It worked no problem.

After installing drivers and all that shabang I restarted again just to see the recovery mode screen again. So I went into the BIOS and tried to Boot from the right Drive but it immediately puts me back into the BIOS. After trying out a few things the solution is to manually boot of the drive Windows was on before. That way it starts normally with no problem. (I checked 3 times. Windows is definitely on the 256gb C drive while the other one is the D drive with games on it now.) If I let it boot on itself it still gives me the recovery screen where it says that there are problems with Windows, only if I manually boot of the D drive from the BIOS I get to Windows. Can someone help me? What is going on?

I know I could just try to reinstall and maybe just chose the old drive, but 1 I don't want to reinstall everything again and second I want to understand what went wrong this time.

Sounds like your C drive is boned somehow.  It’s the one that came off the old laptop yes?  Is it maybe weird somehow?  Laptop manufacturers sometimes do weird stuff to their equipment.  My first move personally would, since you’re running a blank machine anyway, be to boot from the USB stick, reformat the m.2 drive down to base, like write a whole new NFS partition, most basic low level stuff.  Use dispart to see if there’s maybe some sort of other hidden partition on it or something (laptop manufacturers have been know to pull that kind of thing) reinstall Windows, and see if it works.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
