Cheapest GPU compatible with 4k?

Go to solution Solved by LOST TALE,

Nevermind. I found the ATI/AMD pixel clock patcher.

and it worked. 30hz 4k. I'm so stoked.

Like it didn't work. but then when I hit reset, it worked. Praise the sillicon.

Hi,

I'm looking to drive a 4k display for another computer. 3D performance not needed.

Older GPUs do not support as high resolution due to old interface versions (hdmi, DP, etc).

What is the cheapest GPU we can find for 4k?

It seems CRU can't override the manufacturer's quoted resolution limitations.

As context, I could just accept 1440p with a DP cable with the spare cheap gpu I have now.

I'm interested in saving a few bux a tthe cost of refresh rate (curious to see price difference). 30hz can't be too bad for desktop use?

I used to use 4k30 when I took my work laptop home, and due to the limits of the old HDMI support that's all it would do. I wouldn't describe it as a great experience. Even now I'm running a 1440p ultra-wide at 50Hz on my work desk for the same limitation.

Anyway, even if the original question isn't needed any more, I was going to add I have used a GTX 960 with a 4k display before. Lower models in the Maxwell series could be cheaper alternatives. Also some models in the 700 series might be an option as some were Maxwell too, but in all cases it would need double checking. I don't know about older generation.

What's the GPU you're using then? The Vega 56 in sig should have no problem with 4k as I've used one with the 4k monitor I have. I can't remember if I've ever used Polaris with 4k but think it should be new enough.

The 900 series GeForce were the first to have HDMI 2.0, which allowed me to make my 4K60 setup in 2014.

I find 30fps unbearable, even if technically "usable". Just clicking on stuff feels like it takes time to aim properly...

It's not used to play videogames.

I know, but for me even on the desktop it's too slow and highly annoying.
