my old laptop died due to vrm failure there is no power running to the mainboard

How do you know it's the VRM that has failed?

Well, that doesn't say much. There are a lot of things that can break in a laptop and prevent it from working, not just the VRM. Besides, laptops don't typically push VRM particularly hard, so it's actually pretty rare that it'd be VRM that breaks.
