Good evening,

So I got a brand new GTX 1060 SSC from EVGA through an RMA, and I tried plugging it into my motherboard (Acer Aspire M3970) and booting up, but it gets stuck on the Acer splashscreen for a while and my system gives a short beep every 10 seconds or so, until the screen turns black and shows the Acer splashscreen once more for half a second until going into Power Saving mode which means I can't do anything (eg. use my mouse or keyboard and I don't have the chance to go into BIOS) other than just turning it off. Luckily I have a backup video card (Zotac Gt 640) that works perfectly on my computer. I've already contacted EVGA about this and they said that it was due to my BIOS not only supporting Legacy mode and not UEFI. Though I went into my msinfo32 and it shows that my BIOS mode is "UEFI". I also have a Thermaltake 750W that has an 8-pin connector so that's not an issue. I don't have a different PC to test the card on so that's not an option. (Been trying to go through with this upgrade for 2 months now pls help lol)

tldr: My new graphics card won't work but is compatible (pretty sure)

Things I've tried:

- Contact EVGA Support (Multiple times)

- Use different cables to connect to my monitor (DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort)

- Updating my BIOS

- Running DDU and installing the 1060 drivers multiple times

- Doing a fresh install of Windows 10 safely and successfully (didnt work)

- Reset my BIOS by taking the battery out for 30 seconds and placing it back in (this was after flashing BIOS successfully didn't work)

Thanks!

Its the acer motherboard not supporting the new GPU. Some OEM motherboards are like that. You will most likely need a new motherboard and case if not a new power supply and CPU cooler aswell.

yeah that’s what I’ve been told aswell. Can you recommend me the best GPU that I can use that’s compatible with specifically my motherboard? I’ve heard the GTX 660 is good but I wonder if there’s a better one that would work with my motherboard...

Oh man feels bad, do you know why the motherboard is rejecting it even though it’s powered and seated properly?

Because the board was made before the gpu existed, and eventhough this doesnt matter with consumer boards, oem motherboards are just gay like that. Nothing you can do about it besides just getting an older card or a new motherboard.

I can't tell if this is sarcastic, but a 660 is a not gonna play games very well. Even a 680 is barely as good as a 1050 ti

Nah it wasn’t sarcastic lol, I’m not planning to game heavily, just 1080p with 100+ FPS on shooter games. Can you recommend me good GPUs that are compatible with my motherboard? (Preferably NVIDIA)

Honestly I have no idea and there's not really a way to tell, but I think the 700 series might be fine. Something like aa GTX 780 is performance-wise comparable to a gtx 1060 so is fine for modern games. It just takes more power

you dont get it.

We cant recomend anything. If your motherboard is not working with a 1060 then there is a chance it will not work with ANY GPU.

The best solution is a new motherboard and case (assuming the PSU and cooler are standard).

How come my motherboard works perfectly with the Zotac GT 640 that I have?

Also, I can't really afford to get a new motherboard since I've gotten a new case for a new PSU to fit into, and I had to buy that PSU to be able to support this 1060 so that solution would have to wait :(

Thanks for your response
