Heyas guys! Wanted to help to be part of the community as I am a hardware lurking junkie and faithful stream viewer.

So I'm upgrading from a non OC'd reference 5870 to a Gigabyte Wind force revision 2 7950.

So I been doing a lot of researching about this new GPU endeavor. At the end of the day the 7950 was a good fit for me.

My question though is will I be impressed with the GPU upgrade? I hear different reviews about revision 2 of the WF 7950s, some love it while others hate it because votls locked at 1.25. So just wondering what you guys think??

Also planing on upgrading to new CPU/Mobo near end of year.

Current System Specs:

i7 930 OC'd 4.0

12g ripjaw 1600mhz

x58 sabertooth mobo

Kingston Hyper X 240g SSD

AZZA Genesis 9000

Dell Ultrasharp 24' 1920 x 1200 60hz

I was going to get a msi 7950 recently to but with nvidia 700 series just around to corner I think I'm going to wait until then to get the 760ti (which is pretty much a rebranded 670), which should be a noticeable amount faster than a 7950 for same price.

That's a pretty signifigant upgrade.  You'll definitely notice a difference.  I'm not the yoda of overclocking but I know something.  Just because the voltage is locked doesn't mean there isn't still some extra performance to be had.  Your CPU is aging but I don't think it's bottlenecking anything yet.

I can't believe this, I just wrote down a very comprehensive reply & it was deleted T_T .
Anyway short version is, gigabyte 7950 is voltage locked, that's why I don't recommend it.
A highly overclocked 7950 is almost twice as fast as the 5870.

agreed at 1080p you will see a big difference in frame rate speed and then there is all of the software that amd has put in over the last two gens. With three fans it will most likely be very quite. I doubt it would go over 35db(thats not loud)

It's actually the loudest out there, especially once overclocked.

All vendors use the same coolers for both the 7970 & 7950 cards, so this comparison is accurate.

I would not get the Gigabyte 7950 because its voltage locked like TechFan@ic said. I would recommend the HIS Radeon HD 7950 HIS IceQ X2 because this card is a great overclocker and it can beat the 7970 reference card by 5 fps when overclocked.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Community here is awesome!

The Gigabyte WF 7950 has already been ordered. So I'm gonna live with it and make the best out of it. Also noise isn't that much of an issue, the room I play in has a window fan going about 24/7 anyways that's way louder than anything in my PC.

Either way I'm stoked to go from 5870 to the 7950 and the never settle pack that comes with it.  :D
