Hello All,

Was wondering how to separate Wi-Fi into separate VLANs, sort of like how with most home routers there is a guest SSID with only internet access. Are you able to create multiple "Wi-Fi VLANs"

I currently have a Netgear r6400 and a managed switch able to create VLANs.

Thanks

The simplest thing to do is to get another WAP, run it to the switch, and make sure that port is on a different VLAN.

You can, but I doubt the Netgear itself supports VLANs. That's not necessarily a problem, it just means you'll need to do a bit extra config and you might require an additional Access point.

Basically, the proper way to do it would be as follows:

Modem -> Router -> Managed Switch -> Port w/ VLAN -> AP (or Router w/ routing features disabled)

Basically you want the AP (or the wireless router) to run on a port that's being fed from a specific VLAN.

Here's the downside: If your Router/AP doesn't have native VLAN support, you'll need a separate physical AP for each separate "WIFI VLAN" you want to run. If you are okay with all WIFI traffic being on one VLAN, then that simplifies things.

A lot of consumer devices now automatically support a segregated guest SSID.

Otherwise it's typically done on a SSID to VLAN mapping and would depend on the settings available on your equipment, tagging VLAN to SSID is usually outside of the consumer space.
