Why can't you use HDMI or DP?

I'd use whichever one is cheaper or compatible with my monitor.

That sucks, HDMI and DP are pretty much the same, just get the cheapest one.

I'm actually clueless as to why DP exists, HDMI is more universal in my experiences and as far as I know they don't have any performance difference.

The R9-290(X) does only have DVI-D ports, for an adaptor like that, you need an DVI-I port.

You can't use a DVI to VGA as there is no analog pins in the connector. You'll have to go HDMI to VGA, probably the best bet.

will that even work? not sure but i think the cart still needs to support analog devices for that to work.  it looks like a 290 or 290x with no dvi analog pins, i not sure its enabled on the display port.

On another note @lhikary if you can afford a new gpu with no analog pins you can afford to get a new display.  running it on vga would bottle neck the card so much if it was the only screen.  i assume its a second screen am the same but it luckily had dvi on it.

Not sure if it will work. Probably it wont, but HDMi to VGA is quite common so he might fin da cheap adapter to try.

HDMI, DP, and DVI all use the same graphics signals, so there is no advantage to using one over the other in this case. Get whichever adapter is cheapest and/or most readily available, which is probably DVI-to-VGA - in fact, check the box the card came in, it may have come with one. Ask around, someone can probably just give you one.

P.S. Minor detail, but the DVI-to-VGA adapter isn't (or doesn't need to be) a 'cable' - it's just a short dongle you use with the monitor's own VGA cable.

Note - make sure you have enough clearance behind your PC for the dongle plus the VGA cable, or try to get a flexible or right-angle adapter.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
