Does anyone hear experience file explorer crashing whenever I come contact with a Webm. file?

Another instance is when I rename a webm. file or deleting one, it often crashes. Would changing the default opening to VLC solves it?

VLC can open almost any media files, so try it.

You probably installed some software that support webm and add preview of these files to the system (no matter if system handles these files by default, program can override it). It's like Corel and CDR files - if you select option in installer, system starts to display previews of these files instead of icons. So this viewer (or other type of program) don't work good with your system / explorer. It's just guessing of course.

Quicklook is a program that allows me to preview audio files. could that be it?

I bet it's not the only tool for that. And you're not limited to explorer - there are many better file managers - you may choose between single/unlimited panel (like explorer) and two panel. Paid or free. Lot of choices.
