You should just vote "AMD HD7970 (GHz.)" like the titels advises.

It doesn't matter if you have them CFX'd or not, the type of card matters.

1 gives me enough frames for my dual 1080p setup and i broke the crossfirebridge and i mine with them

I have a pair of Sapphire R9 290X in CFX, I use them mainly for EF gaming at 5760x1200 (bezel compensation at 6048x1200), for such res and ingame setting, you'd want a pair of R9 280X and higher for a great gaming experience.

Due for an upgrade soon, but with the huge markup (and extremely low stock) in AMD cards because of mining, I'm waiting for prices to drop (and by that time, may consider Maxwell instead)

Funnily enough, you could throw the 5870 on ebay for $225 (seen some higher) and snag some moneys to put towards your next GPU, as long as you have an interim card to use in the meantime between selling and buying. Those powerful 5870's are (like everything else AMD) making a mint on resale.

 

Although in your case buying anything lower then a 280x will get to you as performance will be too similar... as the 270x will not be much faster than a heavily overclocked 5870, if at all...

Just heard of the R9 - 280 when released (7950 rebadge) and higher should do you fine, but like you said, bit of a high price...

R9-290 because of the price/performance it give and come with XDMA crossfire, that mean better scaling and frame latency.

Have the 6+8pin version of the MSI Twin Frozr 3 7950. Its still a pretty good card for 1080p gaming.
