Graphics card advice

Good afternoon all, my son has a pc and it is running a Zotac GTX 970 with 12pin pci-e plugged into the side, he has now purchased a Zotac 1660ti which only has an 8pin socket, how if possible to we get this to work. I have purchase a converter but when plugged in it fails to recognise the 1660ti. Any help appreciated
