I'm looking to make a server to host a Gmod server on, maybe store files as well. (I don't know if that's a good idea with the server on there.) I've been looking at CPU's and get so many different answers, Xeon's, old I7's, Old AMD processors. I've decided I want an Intel server and preferably a Xeon build. The question is, Which Xeon should I get there's so many! I plan on having $500 for the whole build after selling some spare parts I have laying around. I live in America. If anyone could help me it would be well appreciated!

how large do you anticipate the server to be?

gmod, being an older game, has more of an emphasis on single core speeds, so a current gen i5 or even i3 would be a good call

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Buy an old HP DL380 G7 or newer...used ones with boat loads of ram are available...twin hex cores.  Bought one myself 2 years ago for $450 shipped...not sure of your drive requirements for "gmod", but if you want performance setup a ramdisk and load your games files there...even create a VM in the ramdisk?  Don't really know anything about gmod...

When I first started my server it got 20 people in 3 days. I'm assuming it will end up with at least 50 and at most 90.

I'll look it up, thanks! Looks like they are $200!

I read that gmod is 32bit...so i guess ram requirements are pretty low...no more than 4gb per gmod server?  That said you could create 10 gmod virtual servers on a DL380 like mine with ease if I had to guess...all in ramdisk...that sounds like a cool exercise.  Mine has 144gb of ram and 12c/24t.  If you found something similar you allocate 10gb of ram as ramdisk for each gmod virtual server...then assign 4gb of ram to each...then 2 virtual cores each...bet it would run.

That sounds good, what do you think of this one?

Long indeed ;)  Ummm...I'd look up what the hardware requirements of a gmod server are, but assuming it's not anything more than a 2.66ghz processor...i'd say that would work.  Does a gmod server require a gpu?

No, but I'm assuming I'll need one to output video and manage the server.

Yeah I think you can buy a cheap HP graphics card for simple display.  I've seen a video where a guy installed a GTX 1050 (non-Ti) in a DL380...it worked using only the power from the x16 slot.  That said the server has a VGA output only :(  Kinda sucks...I still need to rig up a GPU in my DL380...I need to buy a 10pin to 8pin power connecter adapter to finish the task.
