Home server plus steam downloads

PaulU

Hi,

I wanna build myself a home server. I'd use my old i5 6500PC for it.

I never worked with servers before. The hardware part is pretty self explanatory. The software side not so.

I want to use it as a file server, but i also want to use it to download steam games over a different internet connection.

So I got 1 network, which is the LAN one, with all the devices. And another mobile network that runs over a usb cable from the reciever to the pc, just for downloads (faster than my LAN connection)

I want to be able to start a download via remote access, and when it's done drag the file over to my pc via the file network.

I don't know if this is possible via Ubuntu Server.

Any recommendations or tips on how to do this?

Thank you!

You can look into creating your own local Steam cache server like LTT has done for their office.

Hi PaulU,

your project seems to be very well possible to do. However, as you are new to servers, I'd probably start with an OS coming with a GUI by default (in my knowledge Ubuntu server does not). This could be a normal Ubuntu for desktop or something like openSUSE or centOS.

Enjoy the build :)
