Black screen every 10 seconds - Graphics card defective? - Sapphire RX Vega 64 Nitro+

Crack

Hello everyone,

I have had a little, well actually big, issue for a while now which I could only temporarily fix...
A while ago I replaced my 1050 Ti with a RX Vega 64 Nitro+ by Sapphire to get better framerates in gaming.

Everything worked fine about 4 months ago where I got a blackscreen every few seconds and then an image again.

After reinstalling Windows 10 it worked again and I thought it was just some driver corruption I could've fixed by a driver reinstall too.
But then, a month later, it started to happen again...

Issue:

The blackscreen starts by everything except my mouse cursor freezing, then the cursor freezes and then the image gets black for a few seconds.

The image doesn't just turn black but my monitors (2) detect no input and turn themselves off and on again and all my audio cuts out.

When the image is there again I get a desktop notification "Default Radeon WattMan settings have been restored due to an unexpected system failure."

A few times, it even completely crashed...

Tried fixes without success:

  • Different monitors
  • Different cables
  • Windows safe mode
  • Moving RAM to other slots (2x 8GB DDR4-2400)
  • Different PSU
  • Reinstalling drivers
  • Using older, known good drivers
  • Reinstalling Windows 10
  • Using Manjaro Budgie Linux (totally glitched out, colourful squares everywhere, then froze and crashed)

Temporary solution:

When I uninstall the drivers I can use it with the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" but that doesn't allow me to play games, even scrolling was laggy, and only works for single monitor use.

While reseating the GPU I found out that if I let it unscrewed (case laying sideways, no worries it won't bend by doing this) it could work, sometimes.

After a bit of trying I got the issue again and just wiggled the GPU a *tiny* bit (not too much to break anything) and after that it worked again, for some time.

Once I got it to work without having to wiggle or reaseat it every now and then and I thought that I should try if it works when I mount it with the bracket and stand the case up again.

This turned out not to work. I found out that even when the case is sideways but the GPU is screwed in, it doesn't work but with the GPU unscrewed theres a chance it does and if it doesn't I can wiggle it and it'll work.
Then I looked a bit closer and saw, that the screwholes of the GPU and the once of the case don't match up perfectly and thought this could be a problem...

But that confused me because it still sometimes didn't work when unscrewed...

I thought of my mainboard being defective (which would be bad but I thought about soon upgrading to AMD anyways) but I tried the same slot with my old GTX560 OC and it worked...

I called the AMD support and the Sapphire support which both told me to reinstall drivers and try a different mainboard but couldn't help me..

What really bothers me is that it isn't defect but sometimes defect and I don't know why but wiggling it can temporarily fix it...

I really hope that you can help me because I don't really have the money to just buy a replacement card and I don't know if warranty can cover this or if it even still is under warranty...

I am 14 so I don't exactly know what to do, but you don't need to talk in baby language to me, I can understand it and if I don't I use google to help me increase my english vocab or I'll ask you to explain what you mean with that.

Man its nice to see a well structured detailed post for once!!

Right I've got 2 things to suggest. The First being run the pc in safe mode. If it doesn't happen then its a higher chance that its still software related.

Second would be to try the card in another system if you can. If it happens there you can be sure its the card.

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Laptop: MacBook Pro M1 512gb

Try executing the following two commands in CMD:

  • CHKDSK
  • sfc /scannow

If you are lucky this is only related to software blocks that can be corrected with this, try it and tell us how it goes.

Thanks, I already did that but forgot to include it in the list, I will add it!
Had the issue in safe mode too...

Thanks!

  • CHKDSK found nothing
  • sfc /scannow took a bit longer and found things and fixed them, I am going to see if the things it fixed were related to my issue and if it helped, I'll edit this.

Edit 1: After an hour nothing has happened so far, maybe that did it... But I will update again tomorrow because when I temporarily fix it by wiggling it takes some time until it happens again. It's currently 8pm here so I'll update it tomorrow at 5pm probably...

Edit 2: I didn't have time to see, if it fixed it, today as I was sick and in bed... I will try to do it tomorrow.

I'll add it to the main message too but I forgot to say that when the image is there again I get a desktop notification "Default Radeon WattMan settings have been restored due to an unexpected system failure."

Those are great news! Hopefully this was just software related and you will be ok now.

Okay, so I've fired up my computer and the problem still exists... Did not fix it sadly...

I will try to check if the card works in another system over the weekend if possible

Hello guys,

I have the same problem but mine is 1070 msi gaming x,

I tried everything and it didn't work.

When I stres test in Aida64 only gpu it don't goes black, as soon as I stop aida64 test it starts again.

And when I start Heaven it goes black and stayed there as long as I don't quit it in task manager.

Any solution that may fix problem would be great.

My friend tell me that he will do bios update as soon as he can.

If that fix problem in the meantime I will post it so you can do that to.
